If a child is impulsive, thrill seeking and anxious he or she may be in for risky behaviour as an adult, according to  University of Montreal psychiatry professor Patricia Conrod. She is testing children for specific personality traits because she is hoping to determine if they are have the potential to develop an addiction. If so, there are some prophylactic measures that can be taken, such as teaching functional coping mechanisms, before the child has an opportunity to turn to drugs to cope.
